Essay about History of the Computer - 1245 Words
History of the Computer The first devices that resemble modern computers date to the mid-20th century (around 1940 - 1945), although the computer concept and various machines similar to computers existed earlier. Early electronic computers were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers.[1] Modern computers are based on tiny integrated circuits and are millions to billions of times more capable while occupying a fraction of the space.[2] Today, simple computers may be made small enough to fit into a wristwatch and be powered from a watch battery. Personal computers in various forms are icons of the Information Age and are what most people think of as a computer; however, the mostâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This effort was funded by ARPA (now DARPA), and the computer network that it produced was called the ARPANET. The technologies that made the Arpanet possible spread and evolved. In time, the network spread beyond academic and military institutions and became known as the Internet. The emergence of networking involved a redefinition of the nature and boundaries of the computer. Computer operating systems and applications were modified to include the ability to define and access the resources of other computers on the network, such as peripheral devices, stored information, and the like, as extensions of the resources of an individual computer. Initially these facilities were available primarily to people working in high-tech environments, but in the 1990s the spread of applications like e-mail and the World Wide Web, combined with the development of cheap, fast networking technologies like Ethernet and ADSL saw computer networking become almost ubiquitous. In fact, the number of computers that are networked is growing phenomenally. A very large proportion of personal computers regularly connect to the Internet to communicate and receive information. Wireless networking, often utilizing mobile phone networks, has meant networking is becoming increasingly ubiquitous even in mobile computing environments.Show MoreRelatedHistory : The History Of Computers1631 Words à |à 7 PagesThe History of Computers What is the history behind the computers we use in an everyday life? Interviewing Free Essays
Behavioral interviewing is defined as an application of communication theory and the study of patterns of behavior to guide in the interview process. It is believed that human communication is affected by learning which affects the behavioral indicators that can be observed and interpreted. Some of those behavior indicators are nonverbal posturing, sensory verbal communication, and eye movement. We will write a custom essay sample on Interviewing or any similar topic only for you Order Now Although there are no step by step methods to use when it comes to behavioral interviewing all these tools should be used along with any other form of interviewing and are not a stand alone method. When looking at behavioral interviewing it is very important that you not only listen to what is said during the interview, but also how it is said. For example if the interviewee has an emotional outburst and inflections of the voice this may give you a clue to a sensitive area during the interview. If someone has sudden silence, uncertainty or confusion, or does a shifting of conversation to an unrelated subject this may indicate that information they have is being withheld. Another sign that the interviewer may have reached a sensitive area with the interviewee is if they have nervous bodily reactions or facial characteristics. As a result of this the interviewer will know that some portions of the statement may require further probing or clarification. The scientific study of gestures a nd other body movements is known as kinesics. This is a form of nonverbal communication which we as call body language. The three categories of learners are visual, auditory and physical. When it comes to nonverbal communication men appear to use different nonverbal communication differently when speaking to men then they do woman. Also age differences also play an impact when it comes to the style of communication. Since there are so many different variances because of peopleââ¬â¢s personal characteristics for example ethnicity, gender as well as age it is important that the interviewer analyze the responses during conversations prior to beginning the interview. Facial expressions may not only be visible and non visible, but they can also be universal. During the interview process some individualââ¬â¢s facial expressions may show the specific emotion they are feeling at that particular time. The facial expressions may include movements to emphasize speech which arenââ¬â¢t typical of the individual so during the interview process the interviewer should watch the movement closely. Even though people may attempt to cover up their facial expressions the smile is the most common cover. If an individualââ¬â¢s smile indicates pleasure they may cover it up by pressing their lips together and pushing the chin muscles up. Other expressions that need to be looked at during the interview are when the individual shows a sign of sadness, sorrow, or grief they will have the lip corner go down. This kind of facial expression is reliable and hard to fake. Sadness, grief, or distress is indicated by wrinkling the center of the forehead muscles. The inner corners of the eyebrows are typically pulled upward. When the eyebrows are raised and pulled together that is a sign that the individual may be showing a sign of fear, worry, apprehension or terror. Body posture also makes a statement about the type of emotion the individual being interviewed may feel. When someone stands with their hands on their hips and have their feet spread apart that may show defiance or aggression. This also can happen when an individual is trying to make what is called a power play. For example if you have someone who has his/her arms crossed, uncross your arms to see if they follow your behavioral lead. If they do then you have achieved control over the situation. If a person is truthful they tend to lean forward which is an indication that they are listening where as deceitful people tend to move away. Watching someoneââ¬â¢s eye movement also provides another way to access information needed to determine an individualââ¬â¢s behavioral pattern during an interview.Look at the direction of the subjectââ¬â¢s eyes in response to any visual, auditory or kinesthetic terms during the time you build rapport with him/her. Normally when the subjects eyes are defocused or staring straight ahead it will indicate recalled or remembered images. It is also common in todayââ¬â¢s society for employers to look at behavioral techniques when interviewing someone for a job. In traditional job interviews we are able to get away with being able to tell the interviewer what he/she wants to hear, even if we are fudging a bit on the truth. For example during a job interview you are asked ââ¬Å"How would you handle XYC situation? â⬠As an interviewer how does he/she know you would really react that way, but with a behavioral interview itââ¬â¢s more difficult to give responses that are unt rue to your character because the interviewer typically will be able to pick it apart and try to get more specific behaviors by probing further in depth or ask you a follow up question like ââ¬Å"What were you thinking at that point? â⬠.With the behavioral interview if the story you told is anything but totally honest your response will not hold up through the probing questions. Employers also use the behavioral interview technique to evaluate the candidateââ¬â¢s experience as well as behaviors, so they can determine the applicantââ¬â¢s potential for success. Some of the characteristics that employers look at are being a self starter, critical thinking, his/her willingness to learn teamwork and his/her professionalism. How to cite Interviewing, Papers

Cumulative Innovation and Market Value
Question: Discuss about the Cumulative Innovation and Market Value. Answer: Introduction Awareness has increased all over the world regarding the emphasis of the business organizations on the environment. Efficient business policies and strategies have been implemented by the modern day companies. In todays scenario environment-friendly products are required to a greater extent so that people can survive in a safe and clean environment. While producing, any product companies should keep in mind whether they are environment-friendly and are not causing any harm to the environment. Organizations which can make environment-friendly products are devoid of getting into unwanted legal matters (R., 2016). This may cause a barrier for the prosperity of the company. The company also might not accomplish a name as a company which is environment-friendly. The company has to make products which are profitable, does not cause any harm to the environment. Adopting specific plans and measures by the company can help the company to get devoid of unwanted legal issues which can cause a b ar towards the improvement and establishment of the organization. Henceforth, the company can prove itself as a company which is eco-friendly. Apart from this, the companies are applying greater and necessary efforts towards the sector of research and development so that, not only can the companies produce high-quality products, but also the products need to be environment-friendly. At the same time, the products made by the company should be money making too. The forthcoming case analysis is related to an Australian company named as Bio-sustainable Feed (BSF). This company produces the food items for the fish. The company utilizes a sustainable procedure for the production of the food products for the fishes. A sustainable means of the technique is undertaken by the company in producing the food products for the fish (Sarker et al., 2016). The company exerts much importance on the research and development sector. This helps the company to generate more improvised products which are also eco-friendly and highly sustainable apart from moneymaking. In this way, the company can prove itself of being eco-friendly. The social ap proval of the company will also enhance if the company proves itself to be an environment-friendly organization. Scientific roles played by the company BSF Ltd towards the society Much importance is given by the Company Bio-Sustainable Feeds on their CSR activities. It can be clearly specified from the case study. Immense emphasis has been laid on the research and development sector of the organization to improvise the sustainability and the smooth commencement of the company. Continuous work goes on in the research and development sector of the company for the improvisation of the products. Products which have a low impact on the environment are being tried to be produced. The company is trying to produce materials in which the use of natural resources is very minimal (Chung, 2016). From the research analysis, it was found that the company is always in a try of using the left over residues of the sugarcane and wooden chips. Apart from using these natural resource materials, the other materials which are of use to this company are methane gas which is collected from the wastes, garbage, sewage and the food processing companies. So it can be seen that the compa ny is using the waste products to a greater extent whereas reducing the use of the valuable natural resources. Apart from this, the company is also avoiding the materials which are mainly required by the magnificent fishes because it is the acceptance of the poor people of the society. The company is trying to make use of the products which are mainly formed. The organization not only reduces the use of natural resources, but also it reduces the amount of waste materials of the society. Apart from that it also helps in keeping the environment clean. All the above-mentioned mechanisms help the company to establish itself as not only the friend of the society but also as a friend of the surroundings. The research analysis depicts that the company tries to make their products from the residues of the wood chip and sugarcane. Dumps, sewage, and food processing firms produce methane gas. Methane gas is also used as a residue for the formation of the products by the environment-friendly company. Therefore it can be clearly depicted that the use of natural resources is being reduced to a greater extent by the company (B. Rust, 2011). The food products meant for the luxury fishes have been given up by the environment-friendly organization. The luxury food items meant for the luxury fish are not affordable by the poorer section of the society. Producing such expensive products is a means of ignoring the lower section of the people of the society. These expensive products are beyond the reach of the poor people of the society. The company keeps much attention towards such matters. So, not only the company is reducing the use of natural resources, making use of the waste products of the society, and keeping the atmosphere and surroundings clean but also the company is gaining an approval in the social acceptance from the society. There has been an invariable increase in the social acceptance of the company. To reduce the impact on the environment, the company has implemented various practices that are environment-friendly and taking into concern specific business activities regarding the environment-friendly nature of the perfect promotion for the company. Through its promotion, the company is establishing itself a company which is environment-friendly and thereby increasing its acceptance in the society. The productivity of the company is getting increased in this way. The company is utilizing a cost effective way in the production of products (Yang, 2015). These products are much improvised. Through proper improvisation and promotion of the products the profitability of the company is also getting increased. The business measures used by the company are to promote the various eco-friendly practices that are being implemented by the company, which are not only reducing the wastage of the society but are proving to become a boon for the society. The company has made its name in the list of companies as an eco-friendly and environment aware organization. The various strategies followed by the company have helped the company in gaining name and fame in the society. Therefore these measures which have been taken have not only improvised the quality of the productivity but have also improved the profit making the scenario of the company in an efficient and valuable way. Inconvenience created during the early research analysis in the BSF Ltd The research conducted by the BSF Ltd, in the beginning, was mainly based on the fish culture feed. The plant based food products were mainly the base for the research conducted. Coincidently they failed to gain success in the research. So, the company again commenced searching an alternative for the proposed research. The fish breed which survived on the plant based products were supposed to solve the issue of the fish-based feed, by converting the productivity from 10kg of low fish value to 1kg high fish value. Instead, the conversion rate was found to be 30kg of feed based on plant corresponding to 1kg of high fish value (Sarker, Rahman and Alam, 2015). In the research conducted by the company 1/3rd of the fish were found to be dead, and the number of mature fishes was found to be less but the growth time was found to be doubled. The mechanism of changing excellent food corps into magnificent fish feed is simply a diversion of low fish value into effective production. The high-cla ss people were only the ones to be benefitted, but the poorer section of the society simply suffered from malnutrition. The fish fed or aqua fed production contained high nutritional values like omega three fatty acids. This element produces fish of excellent quality which was only for the rich people of the society (Rosen, 2005). On the other hand, the poorer section of the society would be totally deprived of the luxurious elements. The company is on its way to in search of alternatives so that their progress might not get hampered. And they might not face any objections from the wide range of the society. The society comprises of both the higher and lower section of people. The company cannot establish totally unless and until all the sections of the society are equally involved in the consumption the manufactured products. The company is always in a dearth to find alternatives for the materials which are not only bio-sustainable but also which are cost effective and are affordab le for the weaker sections of the society. The mechanism of changing excellent food corps into magnificent fish is simply a diversion of low fish value into production. This process just benefitted the high-class people, but the poorer section of the society simply suffered from malnutrition. Minimum chargeable products should replace the expensive components (Weygandt, 2009). The more the availability of the products in a sustainable manner, the more would be the improvement of the company in the present day scenario. Thus the company is on its way to find alternatives so that they might not face any objections from the wide range of the society comprising of both the higher and lower section of the society. Explanation on the differences between research and research development The research is a technique that is operated in a scientific method. Thus creating the unfairness prejudices and the subjectivity should be strictly avoided. For the implementation of the research process should be based on the various types of techniques, and demonstrable equipment and the principles. And when those techniques are implemented properly on the subject then it is provided accurate results. So the scientific research must be conducted very systematically. The events and the techniques of the research to be made are very vital. If any wrong technique can be follow up that it can prove the research to be devastation (Reymend and Pagare, 2016). Therefore the controlling procedures included consist of two types which are the logical procedure and sequential procedure. These two processes like logical procedure and sequential procedure are well known by the academic. A person who is conducting the research presents the practical examples. In the course of conducting the rese arch, the quantity of control and rigidity are clearly shown. In this way, one's discipline is clearly shown. Research and development have taken the various implementation of the analysis. This implementation is used for the development of the organization. And then shows the changes which are undertaken to make the suitable and appropriate balance in the system of the organization. As well as that balance provides the accurate path for development of the product lines. And thus the corporation experience is only focused on the case study for the growth and development of the project (Qiu et al., 2012). The research and development can be done in the form of the innovation process. And the research and development that is based on the development of the research environment which are shows in this case with thus the principles of the research are taking to view with referring to the provided case. Assumptions and calculations for the fair market value patent One of the most important parts to stay in the long run competition in the market is a good innovation of any product of a company. As for that, the long run competition is a very helpful and only way to protect the innovation or new ideas and also provide a bar to those innovation ideas from the other organization. And those new ideas don't have to use them as well as those ideas safe from the other companies. After that, the business document also provides a way for a business purpose to keep their new ideas (Neuhusler and Frietsch, 2012). And those innovative ideas protected from the new companies or organizations. Patents are the most useful documents for the companies. These useful documents are very much significant to the evaluation of the patent, and it is also very crucial for any organizations. It is an unsustainable asset that is given in the balance sheet. The analysis is made for the food production by using bacteria. This analysis is use to generate foods for fish from sugar cane. Methane gas is very effective and exclusive. After that, the methane gas is recaptured which is a new idea of BSF Ltd. $160 million AUD is the estimated cost for the research and $200 million AUD is another cost for the development. And this develops cost to bring it into the market. $500 million AUD is invested in the commonwealth scientific and industrial research organization. This investment amount made the BSF Ltd. Company for research uses up a total of about $500 million AUD. And $200 million is utilized in the improvement of the company (Milburn, 2008). An amount of $700 million AUD will help in creating a patent by the developing countries. This is an innovative idea. It is utilized for the best selling of the product. 8% pa is the discount rate of the project. This discount rate is the benefit for the research project. $700 AUD is the market value patent of BFS Ltd Company. The goodwill of the company and its value in the market will increase only through the innovative ideas of the company. Unique ideas would be protected by the legal rights. The innovative ideas are provided by the patent. The growth or development of a company is strongly determined by the market value. The growth also helps in the determination and evolution of a company. The process of accounting helps to determine the financial transactions of the business as well as keeping the systematic record of all the information. The objective of journal entry is to keep the record of the financial transactions, showing the financial in a chronological order, use as the legal evidence of the financial transactions and preparation of the ledger book. The accounting department keeps the track of the financial transactions of BSF ltd. The transactions are summarized, recorded and presented in the financial report. In the case study, the company BSF ltd produce fish feed from waste materials (Kew and Watson, 2012). The research was innovativ e and unique that attracts stakeholders and customers towards the company. For the development of the company and continuing the research process, Industrial Research Organization and Common Wealth Scientific granted an amount of $500 million to the company. BSF Ltd allocated the received amount in the research and development process of fish feed. On the alternative aquaculture feed the company spends $100 million in a year. The amount of $ 500 million was also spent by the company for continuing the process and $200 million in the manufacturing of the alternative aquaculture feed. The research and development department requires huge investment as the department is responsible for the development of the product. The total amount of investment required by the research and development department is $700 for continuing the research process. The journal entries of the financial transactions shows the expenses incurred and cash received during the year 2013 to 2016. The case study is depicts the commonwealth scientific and industrial research organization and BSF Ltd. A total sum of $500 million is received by the BSF Ltd Company. The BSF Ltd Company spends a total of $100 million AUD in a year. This amount is used for the other aquaculture. The sum of $500 million is required for research and approximately the sum of $200 million is also spent by the organization to increase the other aquaculture feed (Mandal et al., 2010). So for the study and the growth of the project, a total sum of $700 million is required. This total amount is invested by the organization. From 2013 to 2016 year, the cash received is shown by the journal data and the organization incurred the cost that was fixed. From CISRO the grant was accepted and properly utilized by the organization. The grant was utilized for the study purpose and growth of the other aquaculture feed. In the scheme, the Investment will support to develop the value and the brand name in the market. Th e Official documents are valuable by promotion in two years. To properly explain the patent is very important in the book (Belenzon, 2011). The official documents are critical for the invention of something new. The investment in the aquaculture feed will help the organization to increase in the market for the reason of fresh and innovative thought. The research and development section plays the vital role in the success of an organization and henceforth the journal study will help in the collection of information regarding the operating cost, and the cash is spend by the organization. From CISRO the grant amount has been received and has shown and investment in the study and growth and thereby the main constituent of accounting is to collect, to store and to fix the charge of the transaction (Christie, Rawnsley and Eckard, 2011). The charge of the transaction is fulfilled by an organization in a fixed period. The company also received grant from CSIRO and the management appropriately allocated the received amount in the research and development process. The main of the company is to increase its brand value and achieving competitive advantage in the market with the help of producing fish feed from the waste materials. The company faced many difficulties with its first research process. The research of growing luxury fish by the company affected the brand value and decreasing the market demand. The research benefits rich people and the poor one was at risk of malnutrition. However, an appropriate accounting process is important to record all the transactions and allocating the resources in an efficient manner. The demand in the market changes with the change of in the taste, preferences, income and lifestyle. The financial report of a company shows the income, expense, assets, profit and liabilities in the income year. The increase in selling of the fish feeds will help to examine the patent value. Patent gives right to the organizations that others cannot make, use or sell the innovation of that company (HILTON and O'BRIEN, 2009). The patent value of the company has been determined and examined on the basis of the sale of the fish feed. The aquaculture feed is an innovative idea developed by the company and it will help to achieve market targets. The main objective of preparing the journal entries is to show the cash received and spend by the company during a period of time. The accounts department is responsible for recording, storing and analyzing the financial transactions of the company during a period time. Special Management in BSF Ltd Company The management department plays a significant role in managing and controlling the research process. The value of patent are determined on the basis of sale of the fish feed. The control strategies are very much important for the controlling and managing the process of research. The expenditures are to be controlled and utilized as per the process. It will help the company to develop and managing their internal operations. In the research analysis, the BSF Ltd management in the depicted patent provides the value. The control strategies depict the correct routine of the sustainable bio-feeds to the fishes are prepared by the creation of manager of the gallery. The strategies that have been implemented by the company while conducting the research process are as follows: The waste materials are to be used in the production of the fish feed The investment amount should appropriately allocated in the research process The main focus is to prepare high quality food and should be analyzed through several different processes (Holton, 2012). The materials should be utilized appropriately with the use of bacteria to manufacture the fish feed from sugar cane residue, recaptured methane gas and wood chips The sustainable bio products must be used to prepare the food for the fishes. For the good quality production of fish, for the making of the best food product necessary step should be taken into good thought by depicting the policy (Droms and Wright, 2010). The upper part of the stem is used to make food. The improvement of the other farming feeds is necessary to the development of the fish. To refer the agriculture fees for the cost of management provides a significant path. The cost of the material a signifying and seems to meet the expectation. The management standard describes the improvement of the historical feed process. A huge amount of cost is required in the production of the product and the system of feeding the fish also seems to be useless. The problems that are depicted can be easily estimated by the help of the management standard and thus creating sequential development in the system (Horngren, 2013). The development of the aquaculture feed will help to archive competitive advantage in the market as well as use of the bio sustainable materials. The process includes recycling of the waste materials which is consider as an eco friendly process of production. The accounts department is responsible for managing all the financial resources and appropriately allocating the r esources for continuing the process. The control strategies show the historical fish feed system was ineffective and the company suffered huge loss due to the fall of the market demand. The research process are controlled and monitored by the research and development department that focuses on the main objective of the company. The staff members are provided with adequate training and skill technique in order to understand the process and executing the process appropriately. The control measures helps to determine serious issues associated with the development of the company. However, the innovative process will help the company achieve the market demand. The strategies that are also focused by the company are analyzing the steps of the research process, managing internal operations, investment strategies and market opportunities (Karapanagiotidis, 2014). The implementation of technology and taking appropriate steps help the management department to continue the research process. The management department plays a significant role in the development of the company as well as supporting the process of research. The preparation of the journal entry shows the cash recei ved and aid by the company during a period of time. The strategic controls include tracking the issues and implementing appropriate solutions for that issue. References Rust, M. (2011).The Future of Aquafeeds. Scarlet Essays (468 words) - Film, English-language Films
Scarlet Letter Philosophy The book The Scarlet Letter is all about symbolism. People and objects are symbolic of events and thoughts. Throughout the course of the book, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses Hester, Pearl, and Arthur Dimmesdale to signify Puritanic and Romantic philosophies. Hester Prynne, through the eyes of the Puritans, is an extreme sinner; she has gone against the Puritan ways, committing adultery. For this irrevocably harsh sin, she must wear a symbol of shame for the rest of her life. However, the Romantic philosophies of Hawthorne put down the Puritanic beliefs. She is a beautiful, young woman who has sinned, but is forgiven. Hawthorne portrays Hester as "divine maternity" and she can do no wrong. Not only Hester, but the physical scarlet letter, a Puritanical sign of disownment, is shown through the author's tone and diction as a beautiful, gold and colorful piece. Pearl, Hester's child, is portrayed Puritanically, as a child of sin who should be treated as such, ugly, evil, and shamed. The reader more evidently notices that Hawthorne carefully, and sometimes not subtly at all, places Pearl above the rest. She wears colorful clothes, is extremely smart, pretty, and nice. More often than not, she shows her intelligence and free thought, a trait of the Romantics. One of Pearl's favorite activities is playing with flowers and trees. (The reader will recall that anything affiliated with the forest was evil to Puritans. To Hawthorne, however, the forest was beautiful and natural.) "And she was gentler here [the forest] than in the grassy-margined streets of the settlement, or in her mother's cottage. The flowers appeared to know it" (194) Pearl fit in with natural things. Also, Pearl is always effervescent and joyous, which is definitely a negative to the Puritans. Pearl is a virtual shouting match between the Puritanical views and the Romantic ways. To most, but especially the Puritans, one of the most important members of a community is the religious leader; Arthur Dimmesdale is no exception. He was held above the rest, and this is proven in one of the first scenes of the book. As Hester is above the townspeople on a scaffold, Dimmesdale, Governor Wilson, and others are still above her. But, as the reader soon discovers, Arthur Dimmesdale is his own worst enemy. He hates himself and must physically inflict pain upon himself. "He thus typified the constant introspection wherewith he tortured, but could not purify, himself" to never forget what he has done (141). To Dimmesdale, it is bad that Hester is shown publicly as a sinner, but people forget that. What is far worse than public shame is Dimmesdale's own cruel inner shame. Knowing what only he and Hester know, the secret eats away at every fiber of Dimmesdale's being. As the Puritans hold up Dimmesdale, the Romantics level him as a human. The Scarlet Letter is a myriad of allegorical theories and philosophies. Ranging from Puritanic to Romantic, Nathaniel Hawthorne embodies his ideas to stress his Romantic philosophies through Pearl, Hester, and Dimmesdale throughout all of this.

General Environment FActors Affecting the Softdrink Industry Essay Example
General Environment FActors Affecting the Softdrink Industry Essay Example General Environment FActors Affecting the Softdrink Industry Paper General Environment FActors Affecting the Softdrink Industry Paper Discoveries in additives would also provide industry players an answer to cope up with the markets changing taste and preferences with them now being able to produce sugarless sweeteners and caffeine-free products. Moreover, prospects Of a self-freezing can, a smart vending machine, and faster fountain dispensers have spurred developments in the distribution of industry products. Demographics. Age and ethnicity are two main characteristics that affect consumer preference for soft drinks and alternative beverages. Analysts, such as Marcia Muskmelons, the author of Whos Buying Food and Drink, note that soft drink companies that take note of and respond to the age and ethnic trends will do well. She pointed out that for many senior citizens, price is ore of an issue than it is for baby boomers. Theyre not poor, but they cant buy in bulk anymore either. In addition, it has been observed that with age, health concerns become more of a factor when choosing a beverage. However, she adds that a health concern is not going to pull people away from a certain product its going to make them choose a modified version of that product if its available. In contrast to older consumers, younger consumersparticularly teens and those in their twentieshave less attention spans for products and are more likely to prefer products that seems to be fun and different. Social and Cultural Environment. Socio-cultural changes in the environment presents industry players with predicaments that should be answered immediately for it to sustain its position in the market. : The current preference shift of the market towards a healthier lifestyle proves to be one of these dilemmas. This occurrence may partly be attributable to the fact that the baby boomers have reached the age where longevity is of importance. With this, companies must be able to offer products that are natural, low in calorie, fat, sugar, and caffeine, or even with none of these unhealthy components resent in its products. Environmental awareness also presents issues that should be combated by industry players. With waste management at hand, companies in the industry are urged to lead recycling movements to reduce solid wastes brought by the bottles and aluminum cans which have been characterized to have longer period of degradation. Non-biodegradable plastic cups used in its fountain distribution segment, plastic bottles and plastic straps used to bring together six-packs also constrain the company to answer environmental hazards. Culture-based preferences may also hamper companies entry into a certain racket. Entry into China, for example, may be difficult for the fact that tea has been deeply rooted in its culture and lifestyle. Economic Environment. Operating in a global scale, companies are exposed to volatile and varied foreign exchange rates and state of economies. With economies in depression, market spending level is at a lower rate and thus, sales for companies are at a trough. However, with various economies, such as the populous market of China and India opening up to the world market possibilities of entering these markets pose positive outlooks. Political and Legal Environment. In penetrating into emerging and developing markets, legal and political conditions set the parameters. In strategic business alliances with local bottlers, for example, companies must adhere to particular governmental rules and regulations with which such alliance will be defined. Different patent and anti-trust laws in every country also defines how these companies are to operate locally. Furthermore, political conditions such as civil unrest, governmental changes and restrictions bring unfavorable results into the company.

What is a Plot Point How To Identify Turning Points in Books
What is a Plot Point How To Identify Turning Points in Books What is a Plot Point? Weââ¬â¢ve all read a book without a plot point, or, should I say, without a point to the plot. Every story needs a beginning, middle, and end - weââ¬â¢ve known that for about two thousand years, thanks to good old Aristotle. But it doesnââ¬â¢t stop there. In this article, weââ¬â¢ll show how plot points are used to move organically from the beginning to the middle to the end. Then, weââ¬â¢ll cover the difference between a plot point and plot and why itââ¬â¢s important to identify plot points. Finally, weââ¬â¢ll map two popular books by only their plot points.Soâ⬠¦What is a plot point?A plot point is an incident that directly impacts what happens next in a story. In other words, it gives a point to the plot, forcing the story in a different direction, where otherwise it wouldââ¬â¢ve just meandered.Any event in a story can be significant, but if it does not move the story forward, it is just a point in the plot- not a plot point. The latter must:Move the sto ry in a different direction.Impact character development.Close a door behind a character, forcing them forward.Think of it like a bolt, holding your story together: without it, you just have separate pieces of scrap metal. But connect them together and they form a whole, each piece informing the event before it and after it. (image: Harper Row)Clocking in at barely 300 words, Sendakââ¬â¢s classic childrenââ¬â¢s book has a predictably simpler plot than The Handmaidââ¬â¢s Tale. And yet, broken down in the same way, it is surprisingly comparable. It has a beginning, middle, and end, with two Plot Points to transition between and one at the Midpoint altering the course of the story. It also has a narrative Hook, a handful of Pinch Points, and a Resolution.Laid out by only its plot points, Where the Wild Things Are would look like such:Hook: Max is mischievous and dresses like a wild thing.First Plot Point: His mother yells at him and he yells back.First Pinch Point: She sends him to bed without dinner, so he sails to where the wild things are.Midpoint: They make him king of all wild things.Final Pinch Point: He sends them to bed without dinner, then realizes heââ¬â¢s lonely and wants to be loved.Final Plot Point: He journeys back home.Resolution: He finds his dinner waiting for him, still hot. 7 Plot Points of Where the Wild Things Are. What do they mean for your book? Where the Wild Things Are is a tightly structured story that moves naturally in a full circle and ends satisfactorily. More importantly, its bare bones bear uncanny resemblance to The Handmaid's Tale - and countless more stories in the Western canon.Once again, these authors surely did not adhere to strict, structural guidelines in plotting these stories. All good stories simply flow in similar ways, ways that keep the attention of the person being told. In order to keep it flowing and not dribbling, keeping your plot points in mind is crucial. What other stories could you break down by plot points? Tell us the 7 plot points of your favorite book in the comments below.

Understanding the Economic Impact prior to Wells Fargo Foreclosures Essay
Understanding the Economic Impact prior to Wells Fargo Foreclosures - Essay Example As a result of the crisis, many institutions, including those that are not directly involved in lending collapsed while others merged to stabilize amidst the crisisIn 2007, United States was hit by financial crisis, which emanated from a crisis in the subprime real estate loans (commonly called subprime crisis). One of the financial institutions involved in mortgage lending that stood the crisis is Wells Fargo & company, although its rating dropped since 2007, in the light of the financial crisis. In response to the crisis, Wells Fargo & company and other companies increased foreclosure filings by 2008 to the highest record in historical. This paper provides an overview of the subprime lending industry and state the economy in Wisconsin just prior to subprime crisis and the Wells Fargo Foreclosures. Discussion Prior to 1980s, people in Wisconsin, US, had only two choices for obtaining a mortgage. According to Knapp (2010), one could obtain a home loan insured by either the Department of Veteran affairs or by the Federal Housing administration. Borrowers with good credits histories would typically obtain new loans from a bank, saving and loan or any other financial institution. Knapp (2010) elaborates that obtaining mortgage loans became much easier with the deregulation of the lending industries in the beginning of 1980. For instance, the monetary control act and the deregulation of the Depository institutions in 1980 removed the restrictions that imposed a ceiling on the interest rates charged on mortgage loans. One remarkable impact of the deregulation is that it led to the introduction of new mortgage loans, which included ââ¬Ëadjustable rate mortgages that were particularly favorable to mortgage borrowers who had their credit profiles impaired. However, according to Knapp (2010), these events did not lead to an explosive growth in the mortgage industry until the securitization of mortgage loans in the late 1990s. The securitization option encouraged the majority of the existing mortgage lenders to adopt a new business model which Knapp (2010) refers to as ââ¬Å"originate to distributeâ⬠business model. This new model required that the credit risk posed by the mortgages loans was not exclusively to be absorbed by the lending institutions. Rather, it was to be shared with other investors in the world who purchased the Mortgage-backed securities. Knapp (2010) further argues that by 2006, approximately one-fourth of all new mortgage loans in United States were made to subprime borrowers while the other ratio was securitized and sold to investors in the United States and around the world. The increased demand for high-yield mortgage-backed securities among investors, including institutions such as hedge funds institutions and large banks, led the lenders to ratchet up their marketing efforts. They then came up with new products, which were designed specifically for the sector of the mortgage market in order to persuade individuals who were deemed to be of high credit risks to obtain mortgage loans. Among the most popular of these products were the stated-incomeâ⬠and the ââ¬Å"interest-onlyâ⬠mortgages. The stated-income loan required an applicant to simply report his or her annual income during the application process of the loan (Knapp, 2010). The lender depended on the applicantââ¬â¢s self reported income in the determination of the size of loan that one could afford. According to Knapp (2010), many applicants for the Stated-income loans grossly overstated their annual income so that they could purchase a larger home than was economically feasible given their actual incomes. An individual who obtained the Interest-only mortgage loan was required to pay interests on his

Logic exercise hypothesis testing - Assignment Example Doug disregards Alââ¬â¢s statements as not true and argues that at least one of Charlesââ¬â¢ statements is true, further he claims that he does not like to eat game. It is clear that, statements 2 and 3 made by Al are true; Billââ¬â¢s third statement is the only true statement, and statements 1, 2 made by Charles are also true. Doug also makes two true statements, 2 and 3. Therefore, it can be said that, Bill is the poacher, based on the fact that a guilty party makes only one true statement (Poletiek, 2001), is the guilty one. The Butcherââ¬â¢s first statement that he was not there is entirely false, so is his second and third statements, as well. Given that the Butcherââ¬â¢s first statement is false and the Baker first statement claims to agree with it, it means that, his statement is not also true. The Candle stick maker makes at least two true statements, 1 and 2. The Cobblerââ¬â¢s third statement is not true since it contradicts his first statement. He says that he agree with the bakers third statement, which is in agreement with the Butcherââ¬â¢s second statement, which claims that the Cobbler did it. All of the Blacksmithââ¬â¢s statements are true; therefore, he is the only suspect that makes no false

How far was Platos Essay Example for Free
How far was Platos Essay With this end in mind, it seems that he can set about the task by whichever means he likes, so long as it will achieve the end. By telling the creation myth, it is his intention to promote the tripartite theory of society, which will, in turn, promote the ideal balance and justice. For justice to be maintained among the people, the Philosopher kings must hold absolute power. Justice is only possible when each class of the society stays in its own place and does that which is its duty. The Philosopher Kings are the rational element, and, according to Plato, the golden part of society. The silver auxiliaries provide the spirited element, and the workers are the base metal, the appetite element. If appetite should begin to rule over reason, then the body is out of balance, and so cannot function correctly. The same is true of society. If the Philosopher Kings were to be ruled over by the workers in society, balance would no longer be maintained. However, even in the reverse direction, should the Philosopher kings try their hand at farming, they are unlikely to have the specialised knowledge to do so, and so society again cannot function correctly. After all, the city cannot have wisdom and judgement because of the knowledge of its carpenters21, as this would simply make it good at carpentry22. The quality of good judgement is clearly a form of knowledge, as it is because of knowledge and not because of ignorance that we judge well. 23. The society must necessarily, then, be hierarchical, where those who know, rule. They are masters of all the others, and perhaps with an eye on Protagoras, Plato says Master of oneself is an absurd phrase. For if youre master of yourself youre presumably also subject to yourself, and so both master and subject24. The rhetorician places the just society in jeopardy. They are capable of influencing the people and so upsetting the balance between the classes of society and between the elements of the soul. They would be capable of over-egging the spirit of the auxiliaries to such an extent that they might overthrow the guardians, or behave in a way which is reckless rather than brave and jeopardise the protection of the state. As he says, we are left with two qualities to look for in our state Self discipline, and the real object of our whole enquiry, justice25. The base metal, or appetite, could be influenced to feed itself to too great an extent, and so cause the state to cease to flourish. Just as in the context of the human body, appetite must be encouraged to sustain balance and life, but if it is over-excited it causes greed and disharmony. Emotion and appetite must remain in the correct balance to allow normally functioning life. Reason must have ultimate control over the system. Therefore, by analogy, Philosopher kings should have power over the people. On the face of it, the picture emerging is a chilling one, similar to the situation in George Orwells 1984. Whilst it may at first seem that it is this sort of world towards which Plato is leading, the Philosopher Kings have access to the world of forms, and most importantly, the form of the good. For Plato, knowing the Good is both a necessary and sufficient condition for doing the Good, and therefore, once the philosopher kings know the good, they will always do the good. If the Philosopher Kings do only what is good for the sake of the state, then Platos creation myth is, in his terms, justified, as the people are being led towards the truth, and to justice. The Philosopher Kings are incorruptible, and as such will only guide the people towards that which is good for them. Having earlier described rhetoric as used by the sophists as flattery26, Plato now presents it as boldness and irresponsibility. 27. Plato believes that it is the popular applause which destroys any good in such people and deceives them into thinking that they really are statesmen28. He knows that, as it stands, they are so sunken into their own rhetoric and lies that they can be easily swayed, in the way that a Philosopher King cannot. The rhetoricians must pander to public opinion to remain powerful. Rhetoric is a dangerous weapon in the hands of people never trained in its use, who are those who do not know the best interests of the state. The implication is that the Philosopher kings, on the other hand, could know how to use rhetoric to the advantage of the community, and so have more than a mind which is good at guessing, some courage, and a natural talent for interacting with people29. As the rhetoricians do not know reality, they are dangerous to the state, and belong to the group in the simile who see only the shadows on the cave wall, and do not see by the light of the sun. However, we are aware that Platos utopia is based on an aristocratic and elitist view. Indeed, Karl Popper, in his Open society and its Enemies holds that, should Platos Republic ever become a reality rather than merely a philosophical exercise, Plato himself, or just such a person, would be the only one with the knowledge, and therefore, the only philosopher king. The people, the silver and most especially the base metal, have no power in this society. In our modern society, we are shocked by dictatorship, associating it with fascism and Communism. In the context of Poppers own experience of twentieth century Europe, his dislike of Platos apparent aspiration is understandable. We cherish what we see as our right to choose between what the politicians have to say. However, if Plato is right, this does not make sense. After all, we would not choose a surgeon simply by virtue of the strength of his rhetoric. If we would not entrust our lives to a doctor on these grounds then we should not entrust our lives to a politician for the same reasons. However, the two would not be comparable if both were not knowable. In his simile of the sea captain, Plato would have us believe that the good for man is just as knowable as the skill of navigation. If we accept that the good is indeed as knowable as navigation, then we are unable to contest Platos ideas. However, I am more convinced by his pupils view. Aristotle states that the science that studies the supreme good for man is politics30 and yet politics is not an exact science31. This is clearly antithetical to Platos form of the good, and in book I, vi, Aristotle says that things are called good in as many senses as they are said to exist Clearly, then, there cannot be a singe universal common to all these cases, because it would be predicated not in all the categories, but in one only32. This appears to confirm my initial response to Platos theory of forms, which does not seem to stand up to scrutiny in the real world, as apart from the evidence given in The Republic 508e, and the images of the sun, and apart from this, which is on no way substantive enough, there is no evidence for the existence of the form of the good. Gorgias argues that the rhetoric can be used like any competitive skill When morally appropriate33. Plato, however maintains that this would lead the general public to believe that he is an expert on morality when he isnt and think hes a moral person when he isnt34. This is odd, as in the Republic, he appears to support the argument made by Gorgias, yet, in the Gorgias, he presents rhetoric as wholly dangerous, and the rhetoricians as dangerous weapons out of control. The Utopia which Plato has created is presented to us largely in terms of metaphors and similes. Some of these are sufficiently outrageous, such as his creation story, that he even apologises. However, Plato, with the subtlety of a true rhetorician, seems to make his similes so close to reality as to make us accept the truth of what he is saying. Many of those in The Republic include references to everyday things such as farming and sailing. In Gorgias, he speaks of cooks and doctors. We are easily led into accepting his ideas through the everyday nature of these discussions. Then suddenly we find that the sun outside the cave is not merely a part of a simile, but is actually being used to describe the source of all reality and truth. There is no doubt as to the existence of the sun in our world, and we are aware that Plato has led us, by clever rhetorical devices, into accepting his similes as reality. However, the evidence that he presents us with is in no way substantive enough to prove the existence of his world of forms, and so we must wonder whether his rhetoric is merely a means to gaining his political ends. If this is the case, then he is going against his professed views of rhetoric, which would indeed be inconstant. However, the only other alternative would be that he truly did wish us to conform to his ideals. Whichever was the case, it seems likely that, ironically, Plato was the greatest rhetorician we have yet experienced. Bibliography Primary Source Aristotle, The Nicomachean Ethics trans. J. A. K. Lolita: An Analysis of Obsession Through the Decades :: Essays Papers
Lolita: An Analysis of Obsession Through the Decades "Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta." In 1958, Vladimir Nabokov created two of the most unrelenting characters in the history of literature: Humbert Humbert and Lolita Haze. His narrator's voice and main character, Humbert Humbert, explains the complex story of a man and his obsession. To set this book off from other books about obsession, Nabokov gives Humbert possibly the most socially unacceptable obsession of all: pedophilia. This obsession leads Humbert on a cross country journey to find his precious Lolita upon the discovery that she has run away and decided to marry. It is this Lolita that causes much of the controversy in the book. Is she an innocent child who is caught up by a wave of "Humbertism" that seems to control her life? Or is she simply an adult in a child's body who plays off of Humbert's obsession to gain things for herself? The answer is one that involves not only an analysis of the text, but also an analysis of the context in which the text is read. It is this analysis of context that will supp ly a new appreciation for not only the basic plot of Lolita, but also the underlying satire that riddles the book. As with all literature, many of the ideas and plot twists that supply the excitement to this particular book are seen under a guise of the particular generation that reads it. Not only do these ideas no longer play an important part to the interpretation as it is transferred from generation to generation, but many times the way in which a book is written can affect the reader. The most prominent case of this happening is in the works of Shakespeare. The ideas and plots he present in his books are most often lost in our contemporary society as we find not only his word usage, but also his themes to be archaic, and unbarring on modern life. Such is the case of Nabokov's Lolita. There is one slight difference, however, between the writing of Shakespeare, and the writing of Nabokov (and in particular Lolita).

Meno Essay
Meno Paper Assignment Can virtue be taught? Plato starts off the Meno with this simple question. Prior to answering this question, Socrates is adamant about first understanding what virtue is. Socrates and Meno go back and forth throughout the story attempting to figure out the definition of virtue. When they come to the conclusion that they do not know what virtue is, they attempt to prove whether virtue can be taught, is attainable by practice, or is simply possessed by nature. As Meno asks Socrates whether virtue can be taught, Socrates explains to him that he does not know what virtue is.Meno defines virtue to Socrates in many forms. For a man virtue is managing public affairs and in turn benefiting his friends, and harming his enemies. For a woman she must manage the home well, preserve its possessions, and be submissive to her husband. He also explains that a child, a slave or an elderly man also have different virtues. Socrates refutes this definition of virtue. He has not bee n given a definition but yet a list of examples. He gets his point across to Meno by using bees as an example. There are many different types of bees, but one bee does not differ from another in the fact that they are both bees. This same concept has to be true with virtue, for there are many and various types but they all have the same form making them virtues. Here we are presented with the first rule of giving a definition, and that is simply to not give examples. Meno attempts to give Socrates a second definition, stating that virtue is simply the ability to rule over people. Once again Socrates refutes this definition. In the case of a slave or a child this cannot be true; hence this is merely another example of a specific trait of someone who is virtuous. Socrates also adds that if this were true than it would have to be justly and not unjustly.Menos response to this is that justice is virtue. Is justice virtue or is it a type of virtue? This is the next issue Socrates points o ut to Meno. In response Meno says that justice is a type of virtue, therefore he has done nothing more than give another useless example of virtue. Socrates wants to put an end to this problem so he gives Meno the definition of both shape and color to give him an example of a good definition. We are given a third definition by Meno, in which he states that virtue is to desire beautiful things and have the power to acquire them. With this Socrates translates desire for beautiful things as the desire for good things. Meno agrees with this statement, in turn allowing Socrates to once again disprove this definition. There are those who desire bad things, but in their own minds believe these bad things to be good. Therefore these people essentially desire good things but are not virtuous. Meno now explains to Socrates that he has found the definition; it is the capacity to acquire good things with justice. Socrates goes on to explain that this is yet again just a fragment of virtue. In ess ence all Meno has explained now is that virtue is virtue, for justice is a type of virtue. Socrates has brought forward the second rule of definitions, which is that you canââ¬â¢t use the word in the definition. At this point Meno is perplexed, and begins to get angry with Socrates. He informs him with the fact that he came here knowing exactly what virtue was, but now Socrates has driven Meno to the point that he now doesnââ¬â¢t know what virtue is either. Socrates explains that he has not done this purposely but that he truly is just as perplexed, and therefore they should search for this answer together.Meno displays his confusion by asking how it is even possible to search for something that you do not know at all. This is where Socrates introduces the idea that the soul is immortal and learning that which we do not know is recollection. Meno would like Socrates to show him that this is true. Consequently Socrates picks out a slave boy, who was raised in the home of Meno, and begins to ask him geometric questions. He questions the boy about a square, naming the different principles and rules of a square. As the boy begins to answer these questions correctly, Socrates points out to Meno that he has created his own right opinion concerning this logic. Through constant questioning the boy is able to form right opinions on logics that he has never before been presented. Socrates reveals to Meno that this is recollection. Being immortal the soul has learned all there is to know, whether it be in this life as a human or in a time prior to that. In turn recollection is simply the process of turning true opinions into knowledge through constant questioning. With this being known, Socrates illustrates to Meno that one should always seek to find out that which they do not know. In order to find out whether virtue can be taught Socrates and Meno set up a hypothesis that virtue is something good. Socrates begins to elaborate on this fact by stating that if virtue is good, than it is beneficial. They begin to examine what kind of things benefit an individual. Socrates and Meno both agree that Health, strength, beauty, and also wealth all benefit us. Socrates also points out that these same things can do harm do someone. So what is the directing factor that determines whether they are beneficial or harmful? All things directed by wisdom end in happiness. Therefore since virtue is beneficial, it must be knowledge. In turn virtue must be a kind of wisdom. If this is true, then virtue can be taught. Meno agrees with Socrates that this is true. Immediately after the two agree Socrates questions whether they were wrong by agreeing to this. He points out to Meno that virtue might not be knowledge. If knowledge is teachable, and virtue is knowledge, then there would be teachers as well as learners of virtue.Up to now they have not been able to come across any such individuals. At this point Anytus is introduced into the story, and Socrates invites him to join them in their search for teachers of virtue. Socrates asks Anytus if they should send Meno to the sophists who profess to teach virtue. Anytus wastes no time in sharing his negative harsh views of these sophists. Socrates tells Anytus to give Meno the name of an Athenian in which he should visit to learn the meaning of virtue. Anytus claims that any Greek citizen would be able to make him a better man that the sophists.Of these good men can any of them teach virtue, for they have yet to see this. Socrates uses Themistocles as a prime example; he was even the best of men but failed to pass down his virtue to his son. Instead he taught his son to be a great horseman. He presents Anytus with a couple other examples of virtuous men who failed to pass their virtue down to their children. At this point Anytus becomes angry and he leaves. He asks Meno if there are many good men among his people. Meno says that there are many good men. Among these good men do they agree hat they ar e teachers and virtue can be taught? Meno states that sometimes they say it can be taught, and other times they say it cannot be taught. After hearing this Socrates goes on to explain that these men cannot even agree on this point, therefore they are not teachers of this subject. Thus there are no teachers of this subject, as well as no learners, consequently virtue cannot be taught. Now that Meno and Socrates have agreed that virtue cannot be taught, Socrates begins to explain where they went wrong in their original investigation. He explains that they were right in agreeing that good men must be beneficial, and that they will be beneficent if they give correct direction in our affairs. The agreement that one cannot give correct direction if one does not have knowledge, is where they have gone wrong. One may use right opinion as a guide for correct action, in which it is no less useful than knowledge. Right opinion and knowledge differ in the fact that right opinion escapes a manâ⠬â¢s mind very quickly. It is not until one ties these right opinions down, by giving an account of the reason why, that they become knowledge.Socrates explains to Meno that this is recollection, as they have previously gone over. At this point Socrates and Meno have come to a conclusion. Virtue is not teachable and is not acquired by nature, but comes to those who possess it as a gift from the gods which is not accompanies by understanding. Socrates leaves Meno and ends the story with one final statement. He says to Meno, ââ¬Å"We shall have clear knowledge of this when, before we investigate how it comes to be present in men, we first try to find out what virtue in itself is. ââ¬

The invasion in Afghanistan was consistent with the Brezhnev doctrine
The invasion in Afghanistan was consistent with the Brezhnev doctrine that relied on the concept of socialist internationalism that involved help to states that have already joined the bloc of Communist states. The campaign was most probably enabled by a change in the doctrine that involved extra-bloc interventions and more expansionist policies. Although this explanation sounded weak with respect to Afghanistan that never had so much as a mutual assistance treaty with the Soviet Union, the Soviet Union barged in to take control of the area that seemed ââ¬Ënobodyââ¬â¢s territory. Most probably, the basic reason behind the invasion was to set up a military zone in Southwest Afghanistan that would yield control of the Persian Gulf area. The geostrategic position of Afghanistan was also convenient for reaching India, Burma, and Pakistan with Soviet missiles. Besides, the regime in Afghanistan was to certain extent pro-Soviet, and it was imperative to show that revolutionary gains we re irreversible. Besides, the prospects of an Islamic state established in the area seemed undesirable to the Soviets, because the Soviet Central Asian republics could become influenced by radical Muslim ideas. At the time of the invasion, the USSR could have feared antisocialist encirclement that would include Pakistan, China, and now, Afghanistan. The departure was difficult because the Soviet leaders probably felt the need to bring the war to a victory because of the enormous time and costs that already been committed to the enterprise. They felt that they needed the victory to buttress the pro-Socialist government in this Eastern nation in order to provide support for their nation in this area. The international prestige of the Soviet Union would have been ruined by the loss in the war against a Third-World nation.2. The West reacted with strong disapproval of the Afghan campaign and tough measures including boycott of the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980, economic sanctions, and dela y in the ratification of the SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) II. The negative reaction in the Third World triggered the disapproving resolution from the UN General Assembly. The Carter Doctrine emerged that warned against any attempt to take control of the Persian Gulf. The reaction from Socialist nations was mixed. Nations like Romania, China, Yugoslavia, and Albania were opposed to the idea, whereas East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria were enthusiastic. Others like North Korea and Cuba were undecided on the issue.3. The war started with a surprise attack as 200 military transports arrived in Kabul, occupying the land with 90,000 troops. The attack proved successful as it allowed the Soviets to kill Amin, establish the government led by Babrak Karmal and effectively seize control of a large territory. However, the later tactics were not that successful.Discovering large guerrilla operations, the army tried to wipe out whole areas, trying to weaken the local population . This further set the local people on edge, perpetuating support of guerrillas. The split of the army into 20% of counterinsurgency units and 80% of occupational forces led to decrease in morale of the occupational forces. The scorched earth policy in particularly hostile areas and provision of incentives for peasants to support the Soviets did not work very effectively either. The low popularity of the puppet Afghan government and its inability to reduce factionalism were other reasons of failure4. The decision to withdraw was made largely because of coming certainty that the war could not be won effectively. An 8-year campaign had failed to establish effective control of the whole territory and damaged the reputation of the Soviet military. At home, the support for the war dropped to dramatic levels, and it was causing deterioration of the morale of the military because of psychological stress and substance abuse. Financial costs also weighed in, as the Afghan campaign competed fo r a share of the Soviet budget with other conflicts in Ethiopia, Angola, Nicaragua, and Vietnam. The international relations were expected to improve in case the war ended. The removal of Soviet troops reduced pressure on NATO to ward off the Soviet threat and could improve relations with the West, accelerating dà ©tente. Improvement was also expected in the relations with China and Muslim nations.

How to Tame a Wild Tounge Essays
How to Tame a Wild Tounge Essays How to Tame a Wild Tounge Essay How to Tame a Wild Tounge Essay English: The Dominant Language In the essay, How to Tame a wild Tongue, Gloria Anzaldua the author, states the importance of maintaining ones native tongue. She believes that people should speak whenever or however they please given that it does not harm anyone. Anzaldua does not want to escape her Mexican ways such as speaking Spanish. It is a vital part of her life because she communicates with her family members speaking a variety of Spanish dialects. Since she has no other way to show her Mexican ways, it is key that she speaks Spanish to maintain her Mexican pride. People take pride in the languages that they speak and its not right for others to tell them they are not allowed to express themselves in those foreign languages. On the other hand, it is important that to speak English in order to communicate with her classmates, teachers, and anyone around her. English is fast becoming the dominant means by which the world is able to communicate. It is being referred to as the global language as it is seen as a common means for interaction between different countries. This new phenomena can be seen in a positive light because the use of English as a ommon language brings efficiency and greater understanding. Nevertheless there some people who believe that this fact has changed and that now it is more important to learn Spanish and Mandarin than the English language. Anzaldua dealt with this issue on a consistent basis in her school life. Though she was not told to lose her Spanish ways, she felt that speaking English would not allow her to express herself. Especially in the American culture, it was necessary for her to learn English to communicate with her peers. Furthermore, the English language is the number one lingua franca no other comes close. At the moment about 1.113 million people speak Chinese as their mother tongue, whereas about 372 million speak English. Following this criterion Chinese must be the worlds global tongue; and yet analysts considered English to be the global language of the century. Imagine if Chinas economy takes flight in the coming few years, enabling the country to replace the United States as the greatest economical power, there would be a possibility that China could take over in the next couple decades. In fact, reports have shown that the number of Chinese learners is increasing dramatically. Chinese learners in Africa, for example, have increased to 8,000 in the year 2005. The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation published the statistic in a 2005 report. The report also says that in Sudan alone, Chinese learners have amounted to 450, and many have come to China to learn on Chinese government scholarships, according to Peter Nyot Kok, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Sudan. According to the U. S. Bureau of the Census, ten years ago about one in seven people in this country spoke a language other than English at home. Since then the proportion of immigrants in the Southwest are heavily Spanish speaking. Hispanic people make up 30 percent of the population of New York City, and a television station there that is affiliated with a Spanish-language network has been known to draw a larger daily audience than at least one of the citys English-language network affiliates. According to the census, from 1980 to 1990 the number of Spanish-speakers in the United States grew by 50 percent. Statistically, more people in the world speak Mandarin than English, but Mandarin is not spoken much outside Asia. A global language is a language spoken internationally. A global language is not only a majority people spoken, but also use in international organization or international event. Its a well-known fact that there is huge demand for English speaking professionals in China who can facilitate international business. There is also acute demand for English teachers who can make the Chinese students better equipped for modern-day business and life. Chinese has more native speakers, however, it also has simplistic grammar, and it lacks articles, prepositions, verb conjugation and tense, singularity and plurality of nouns making it less effective than English at expressing complex meanings. It is also tonal, which limits the speakers use of tone for emotional and conceptual expression. Furthermore most Westerners find the Chinese writing system difficult to grasp. So from emerging trends, it seems evident that Chinese is not more popular than English as a global language. English is widespread largely due to the fact that it is used so heavily in television, film and music. Hollywoods global spread has contributed strongly to the international popularity of English. It is also the predominant language on the Internet. Web pages in other languages often tend to ave an English translation. The British Empire and the dominant nature of American popular culture have contributed overall to the spread of English across the planet. Because of this many young Hispanics have favored adopting the English language into their culture. In South East Asia, as a result of English becoming a kind of global currency, there is a large turn towards acquiring language skills not in any language but most specifically in English. As the world becomes more globalized or as corners of the planet open up for trade relations with other countries and tourism ooms, the need for English increases. Hotels, shops and schools have a desperate desire to sell their services and make a living. Peoples ability to survive is strongly linked to their ability to communicate in English. Consequently native languages become redundant and even endangered. People focus on learning English over learning other languages and also in many cases need to use their individual languages to a lesser degree. In fact more Asians speak English than anyone else. One of them is that it facilitates the exchange of information from one part of the world the other with ease. It is through the existence of a global language like English that peace and trade has been enhanced between dissimilar countries. It has also facilitated the mobility of people both in their physical terms and also electronically. Sufficient statistics indicate that most trade is done electronically and this is greatly facilitated by English as a global language. Finally, there are economic advantages connected with a global language. Crystal claims that the more a community is linguistically mixed; the less it can rely on individuals to ensure communication between different groups (Crystal 2003:11). ending large sums of money on translations and interpretations in order to reach its citizens. A global language known and spoken by everybody would undoubtedly lower these costs, and the spared money could be used in other important areas instead, for example in humanitarian aid. In fact, during the last decades the need of interpretation and translation in international organizations has progressively has been decreasing thanks to the expansion of English. Many international organizations find it necessary that all people involved speak English, since the translation expenses would be too high. According to Crystal half the budget of an international organization could easily get swallowed up in translation costs if there was a lack of a common language (Crystal 2003: 12). Mutual intelligibility, great career opportunities and reduced administrative costs are some of the advantages a global language would give. We are in need of an international language for communication, politics, trade and security, but at the same time we are worried about language death, the advantages native speakers will have and all the disadvantages non-native speakers will face. English is growing, it is strong language, and its future seems bright. My opinion is that if there will ever be an official international language English is the best option. It is a strong, well- developed language with millions of speakers. Even if a global language might be important, different languages are of importance for their culture and for the development of their native speakers. Anzaldua wants to maintain her heritage by speaking her language constantly. She is in fear that speaking English will lead to the death of her heritage, but the integration of her heritage with English will only allow er to have communication with more people around her. A Research Proposal of the Effects of Online Gaming
However, although many claim that educational potential lies within video games, they still have not been universally been regarded as a quality learning tool. Patricia Greenfield (Mind and Media) claimed in 1984 that with increasing technology and increased research that future video games would be a vital component to the educational process. David Sheff (Video Games: A Guide for Savvy Parents) said almost the exactly same thing in 1994. Thus, it seems as if the issue of using video games for educational purposes is still not fully accepted and their implementation brings forth many concerns. It is also seen that we have constantly regarded video games as having high potential and that their use in education will be vital in the near future. However, these visions have remained the same as time has passed and the foreseeable goal of implementation has still yet to be reached, for we keep pushing the time line further into the future. This brings forth the question of will this push back continue as years pass or will the educational potential of video games be reached in the near future?Video games are seen as a good learning tool because many think that they can teach children in ways that their teachers are failing by sparking their minds, stimulating their thinking, and inspiring their imagination. Addictions to Internet games, particularly massive multiplayer online role-play games (MMORPGS), have emerged as a threat to public healthââ¬âa new epidemic. Although they pose no direct physical danger, they take a toll on the mental well being of players. This disease is as equally debilitating as an addiction to drugs or alcohol.Consequently, addictions to these games have ruined lives as they disrupt family life, distract students, and compromise jobs. Although some video games provide benefits to society, when used as a tool to engage children in the classroom, or train soldiers on urban warfare, the posit ive impact of these programs are negated as soon as one considers the potential damages. Proper use of games requires the responsibility of the gamers and the marketers. Software developers should reveal the potential dangers associated with the games, like how the games have a possible addictive nature.Perhaps these programs need to have labels that warn of possible health consequences. The labels would be similar to the labels that law requires tobacco companies to place on their cigarettes. Public awareness should encourage members of society to be aware of the personal consequences of excessive gaming Conceptual Framework: To conduct a research to test the in observing them of the effects of online gaming in students. Statement of the problem: This study aims to know the effects of online gaming to the students: Significance of the study:Although the addiction factor and gender issues still exist to the same extent in online games as they do in offline games, it looks as if online gaming has provided answers to the other negatives that have plagued video games. The first obvious positive that online gaming has brought to video games which was no t available to off-line games is interaction among numerous other people. Off-line games were mostly solitaire in nature and had zero social aspects associated with them. Online games have allowed for a reintroduction of socialization among games. And this socialization has no boundaries, for a very diverse Internet population exists.Playing over the web will help develop friendships, whereas playing off-line can lead to a decrease in friendships. Another positive that online games bring forth is a decreased amount of violence. Most of the violent games being played off-line are quick action games that require rapid button-pushing. However, because of latency and lag issues these games have had a difficult time being transformed into an online medium. Furthermore, when these type of games are successfully transformed into an online game the number of enemies is drastically decreased. One is no longer playing against a tremendous amount of monsters that have been implemented into the game but rather just a few enemies being played by other humans. This forces one to methodically formulate strategies on how to dominate and beat the other individuals instead of creating an atmosphere of just killing everything in sight. The final negative factor of video games that online gaming may alleviate is decreased intelligence. Much more constructive thinking is necessary to be successful in online games, mainly because human opponents are more unpredictable and tougher than the monsters in offline games.
